Back pain is incredibly common—almost everyone experiences it at some point. Usually, it's just a muscle strain or a minor sprain that heals with rest.
However, in rare cases, back pain is a warning sign of a serious medical condition that requires immediate surgery to prevent permanent paralysis. Dr. Atul Sharma explains the critical "Red Flags" that mean you should skip the painkillers and rush to the hospital.
This is a rare but severe condition where the bundle of nerve roots at the lower end of the spinal cord is compressed. This requires surgery within 24-48 hours to prevent permanent loss of function.
Symptoms to watch for:
Pain is uncomfortable, but weakness is dangerous. If the nerve compression is severe enough to stop muscles from working, you risk permanent nerve damage.
Back pain can sometimes be a secondary symptom of a systemic disease. These are not surgical emergencies like Cauda Equina, but they need urgent medical investigation.
If back pain starts immediately after a high-impact event (car accident, fall from height, or sports collision), do not move the patient aggressively. There could be a spinal fracture. Even a minor fall can cause a fracture in elderly patients with Osteoporosis.
